Travelogy is not only the science of travel. Travelogy is the art of discovering one of the most stunning travel destinations around the world!
New Zealand is not your ordinary travel spot. For starters, it is far away… from everything. Sitting deep at the bottom of the map, the next stop after New Zealand is Antarctica. This country is the real “Down Under!” Christchurch, the main city of the South Island, is one of the main gateways to Antarctica but that doesn’t make it much easier to find. The country is in fact so far from most people’s minds that it is even missing from many world maps! To address this, New Zealand’s government recently launched a tourism campaign called “Put New Zealand back on the map!”. Smart as!
Yes, New Zealand does have beaches, like most dream holiday destinations. It is actually surrounded by beaches, as it has two major islands. But you won’t find the turquoise sea, the perfect sand or the still, warm waters of the Mediterranean. You will find a wild, rough ocean beach whose most frequent visitors might be albatrosses, small blue penguins, lazy seals and, down south, sea lions.
One of the friendliest human species in the world can actually be found in New Zealand, too: the Kiwi! Don’t confuse them with the kiwi bird, though, for these Kiwi are smiling creatures fond of the open air and sunshine, and always relaxed and happy to help in any situation. They have a naturally welcoming nature that is contagious, and their bond to the outdoors can seem quite strange to visitors, especially people arriving from the big cities of the world…
Walking barefoot or in flip flops (called “jandals” here) regardless of the season, Kiwis love to “take it easy”. You might even find one wandering the shopping mall in his socks – do not be alarmed. They love BBQs, sports or all kinds, riding bikes and they follow rugby like a religion. So be warned, your luxury beach gear and that outfit from the new Versace collection might not impress anyone
around here. 🙂
There is a special kind of luxury in New Zealand. It’s not the material, touristy sort that is bought and sold in other parts of the world; rather it is a luxury that enriches in a more grounded, primal sort of way. Here, you can find yourself by removing layers rather than adding more. That said, New Zealand is anything but a cheap destination. On the contrary, it is expensive. But it is a destination that will open up a world of other journeys. It is an experience that at the end of the day will make you richer!
